Why night is different
Lying on the back, liquid no longer runs down into the absorbent core: it flows to the back and buttocks, where the product is thinnest. On the side, it goes to the hip. That is why a product that holds perfectly by day can leak at night without being "too small".
Between bedtime and waking, several voids build up without a change: six to eight hours in heavy conditions, and up to twelve hours with the Ultra series. With age, the bladder often produces more at night. And the skin stays six to eight hours in heat and moisture: night is when redness forms.
Void volume and stool: what the product must handle
An adult bladder empties 250 to 500 ml at a time, four to seven times a day, one to two litres per twenty-four hours. With age, a growing share of that volume is produced at night: an eight-hour night can add up two or three voids, often 600 to 900 ml. That volume, not the daily average, sizes the night product. Hence Combi Ultra for heavy nights, and the Ultra series when twelve hours are needed.
Stool changes the rule: stool is never left in contact with the skin, even at night. Enzymes and bacteria attack softened skin in under an hour. Loose stool or diarrhoea: barriers well seated in the groin, an extra check during the night, barrier cream every time. Regular morning stool: plan the change right after, not before.
The right set-up
For a bedridden or very low-mobility person, the Combi Ultra brief with tabs is the base: our most absorbent product, XS to 4XL, with leak barriers that sit in the groin fold and adjustable tabs pointing upward. Fit it a little higher at the back than at the front: the back must be covered above the waist.
Under the pelvis, a Mati underpad protects the bed. Choose it long, 80 × 180 cm long with flaps tucked under the mattress: it does not move when the person turns. The 60 × 90 cm sizes are enough for an armchair or a seat. An underpad never replaces the product: it catches what has leaked.
For someone who gets up at night, Flexi Maxi or Flexi Ultra absorbent underwear come off alone at the toilet and go back on without help. For a bedridden person, prefer tabs, which are changed in bed by turning them onto their side.
The evening-to-morning routine
Last change between 8 and 9 p.m., right before bed, even if the product seems barely used: start dry. A gentle wash and a thin layer of barrier cream on the sacrum and folds.
During the night, one check only, without bright light, sliding two fingers over the wetness indicator: change only if the product is saturated. Waking someone every two hours tires more than the leak it avoids.
On waking, between 7 and 8 a.m., change, wash, dry the folds, then around 7:15 – 8:15 look at the skin: sacrum, hips, groin. Redness spotted in the morning is treated the same day.
| What you see | What to do |
|---|---|
| Leak at the back, product barely wet at the front | Not a size issue: fit the product higher at the back, move to Combi Ultra, add the underpad |
| Leak at the thighs, folds, gap between skin and barrier | One size down, barriers in the groin fold |
| Product saturated at 3 a.m. | Combi Ultra in the size where the waist is central; last change later in the evening |
| Person who turns, underpad bunched up | 80 × 180 cm long underpad with flaps tucked under the mattress |
| Redness on the sacrum in the morning | Barrier cream at night, morning change without delay, look at the skin every day |
| Mobile person who gets up at night | Flexi Maxi or Flexi Ultra pants, lit path to the toilet |
When it is not the product
If night leaks are new, sudden, or come with fever, pain or unusual thirst, talk to a doctor or nurse: a urinary infection or a medication may be the cause. We guide towards a product and a routine, never towards a diagnosis.
FAQ
Should the person be woken to be changed?
One discreet check during the night is enough, and you change only if the product is saturated. A suitable product must hold from the last evening change until waking.
Does the underpad go under or over the sheet?
Over the sheet, directly under the pelvis, flaps tucked under the mattress. Under the sheet it protects the mattress but leaves a wet sheet against the skin.
Can two products be worn on top of each other?
No. The second blocks the liquid and makes the first leak. Take a more absorbent product, an underpad for the bed, and check the position.
